Kate Dowman – Biography

Surrounded by music all her life, and heavily influenced by the Celtic music and history that she was immersed in during her childhood on the Isle of Man, there was only ever one path for the soprano Kate Dowman. From those early years, through prestigious music scholarships, University degrees and earning the chance to sing at the Sydney Opera House it has been quite a journey. Kate now finds herself poised on the brink of a recording career with a new album being produced and attracting some truly stellar talent. In recent months Kate has worked with Andrew Powell – who produced the revered first two Kate Bush albums – Grammy winning arranger and composer Anne Dudley, accomplished hitmaker/producer John Williams and many more. The result is a unique brew of classically-informed but modern pieces, largely featuring Kate’s own lyrics, that exert a real pull on the listener and seem certain to find a wide audience. Offering Kate’s stunning vocals and often working around a much-loved classical work or motif, the album offers an integrity and intelligence but above all performance and heart.

Kate first independent steps in music came when she won a coveted music scholarship to Downe House School, quickly rising to become Head Of Choir. Upon leaving, she again won a music scholarship to Oundle School where she began training with renowned Opera singer Rita Cullis. She won a place at the University of Leeds to study music, having decided to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional singer and she began to take the lead roles in the many productions put on by the Leeds Youth Opera.

The dream for Kate now was to take her singing further and win a place on a prestigious Operatic training course. However, as she ratcheted up her work load to prepare for her attempts to win a place, she was diagnosed with what was initially described by doctors as a fatal tumour in her liver. After an operation which removed 60% of the organ, she had an incredible recovery. Determined not only not to give up on her dream, but also to keep a promise to her late father who had urged her not to give up on her passion, Kate moved to Australia when she was strong enough and began training again.

After a successful time in Australia, which saw her perform five times at the Sydney Opera House, Kate returned to the UK in order to take her career to the next level. Signed up immediately by an ambitious and experienced management team and taken on by The Agency Group. Kate has already been approached by Goldie to take the lead role in his touring classical show in 2010, performed regularly for the likes of the Holland Park Opera, undertaken private shows for the likes of Madonna and sung anthems at Twickenham and the Ajax Stadium.

It is her album though that is closest to her heart and with the buzz building and glowing feedback from industry insiders, it seems that Kate and her stunning voice will soon reach the huge audience they deserve.
