Crippled Black Phoenix

Fifth album due in January 2012

(Mankind) The Crafty Ape, the fifth studio album from the category-defying British post-rock act Crippled Black Phoenix, will be released on 30 January 2012 through Cool Green Recordings, part of the Mascot Label Group on double vinyl and double CD [Cat. No. CGR73601 and CGR73602 respectively]. Building on the work that has gone before, yet more ambitious in nature and scope, this double album represents a real step forward for the band. Split in to three chapters, the album plays out as a series of facts and stories.

Recorded at the renowned Chapel Studio in the Lincolnshire Wold, the sonics on the new album are deeply imbued with an febrile atmosphere aided by the amazing acoustics within the chapel walls. Mainman Justin Greaves commented, “It’s like finally being able to breathe and the music is now reaching more of its potential. I’ve rarely had a recording session where every part of the process and musical layers has made the whole thing better and better almost without trying…it just feels right”. With UK dates coming up next year, it will be great to hear the new material transferred to the performance milieu where CBP excel.

LP / CD 1:
Chapter I ? A Thread
Nothing (We Are…); The Heart Of Every Country; Get Down And Live With It; A Letter Concerning Dogheads; The Brain/Poznan

Chapter II ? The Trap
Laying Traps; Born In A Hurricane; Release The Clowns; (What?)

LP / CD 2:
Chapter III ? The Blues Of Man
A Suggestion (Not A Very Nice One); (Dig, Bury, Deny); Operation Mincemeat; We Will Never Get Out This World Alive; Faced With Complete Failure, Utter Defiance Is The Only Response

Musically, what we have here is Crippled Black Phoenix in a more focused state: intense, complex and strangely thrilling. There’s the usual dose of misery/hope, but also a large dose of rock, the volumes have been turned up and self-awareness is present. Given the eclectic nature of the band, which took in members of acts like Iron Monkey, Gonga, Mogwai and Electric Wizard, (Mankind) The Crafty Ape itself reflects all aspects of CBP’s multi-layered polyglot persona.
