Live concert CD and DVD announced
Steve Harley is delighted to announce the release of the “Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Birmingham 2013 – Live” DVD and 2CD album [recorded at his special one-off show in Birmingham on 24 November 2012]. The DVD and double album will be available from 14 October 2013, via Absolute. Acclaimed by The Times as an “Exhilarating journey of a lifetime,” the show featured a barn-storming performance of “The Human Menagerie” and “The Psychomodo” albums in their entirety, in sequence, back to back. Accompaniment came from Cockney Rebel but also the Orchestra Of The Swan and their Chamber Choir. The demand for tickets was massive from the moment the show went on sale, and it sold out five months ahead of time, with no advertising.
Steve explains, “The albums were both heavily orchestrated, and I brought the original arranger, Andrew Powell, with me to conduct The Orchestra of the Swan and their Chamber Choir, all complementing my 8-piece rock band. There were almost 50 players on stage, and ‘Sebastian’, ‘Death Trip’, ‘Ritz’ and other big productions were played in their original format.”
Record Collector magazine hailed, “A sumptuous 140 minutes of vintage fare”, whilst The Times remarked that this was “an extraordinary concert in every sense”.
Cockney Rebel’s debut album, “The Human Menagerie,” was released by EMI in 1973, immediately marking Steve out as an original and distinctive artist, and Cockney Rebel as a versatile and charming band playing music that ranged from pop to glam-rock and progressive-rock. The epic 12-minute ‘Death Trip’, taken from the album, was performed live in Birmingham with the full orchestration of the recorded version for the first time ever! The set also included live favourites ‘Judy Teen’, ‘Stranger Comes To Town’ and ‘Black Or White’.

The band’s follow-up album, 1974’s carnival-esque “The Psychomodo”, further established Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel as an eclectic musical tour-de-force – particularly unique for their use of violins in place of electric guitars. The album features the hit track ‘Mr. Soft’ and was co-produced by The Beatles and Pink Floyd engineer Alan Parsons.
The release of “Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Birmingham 2013 – Live”is a true treat for Steve Harley fans and a fantastic reminder of an incredible night of music. Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel are performing live again this year, having announced a 13 date UK tour in November.
