Piledriver Deluxe Edition
Expanded 2-CD Deluxe Edition version of the band’s classic 1972 album
Status Quo release the “Piledriver Deluxe Edition”, issued by UMC, on 24 March 2014 [Cat No 0602537660193]. This carefully curated special release features an expanded 2-CD Deluxe Edition version of the band’s classic 1972 album. The second CD is a bonus disc of live performances and radio sessions. The “Piledriver Deluxe Edition” album booklet features extensive liner notes by rock writer Dave Ling and a host of rare artist photos provided by former tour manager and ‘fifth member’ of the band Bob Young.
The fantastic fifteen tracks worth of bonus material are taken from the band’s Peel Sessions [the DJ famously included a Quo single in the Record Box containing his favourites], recorded on 20 November 1972 and 09 January 1973 respectively, plus a BBC “In Concert” performance recorded at the Paris Theatre in London on 01 March 1973. See over for full tracklisting.
Piledriver, was the band’s first album on the legendary Vertigo label and reached No.5 in the chart. Featuring the classic ‘Frantic Four’ line –up of Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan, this album built on the evolving sound developing through the first two albums and heralded an even heavier, self-produced sound. Kicking off with ‘Don’t Waste My Time’ by celebrated songwriting team of Rossi / Young, ‘Piledriver’ closes with a stunning rendering of The Doors’ ‘Roadhouse Blues’. The album’s only single, ‘Paper Plane’ was to become the first in a sequence of thirty-three Top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart when it peaked at No.8 after its release in November 1972. During this period, and throughout the rest of the 1970s, they became one of the UK’s leading rock bands, gaining a faithful following due to their relentless touring and energetic live gigs.
This release is fully supported and endorsed by the band members, past and present – “Piledriver Deluxe Edition” is a triumphant revisiting of one of the defining moments of a truly seminal British rock act. The ‘Frantic Four’ themselves are the band on everyone’s lips at the moment as they complete a valedictory tour of Europe in March and April 2014, including 10 UK / Eire dates [see over].
